Democracy: A Journal of Ideas is hiring an assistant editor to help expand the journal’s scope and reach. Democracy is a quarterly policy journal founded in 2007 whose mission is to build a vibrant and vital liberalism for the twenty-first century. The journal has published many of the leading intellectuals and policymakers of our time, including Elizabeth Warren, Ronald Klain, Danielle Allen, Jared Bernstein, and many, many others.
The assistant editor will help at all stages of the production cycle, but with a special focus on researching potential topics and authors for future essays, book reviews, and projects. This is a position that requires a high level of literacy in the intricacies of American policymaking and politics. Issue area expertise is not required, but an ability to quickly familiarize yourself with ongoing policy debates is a must. We want to be publishing the first essays of up-and-coming policy thinkers, not stale recapitulations.
The assistant editor will be one of just four full-time employees, so expect to be involved in all parts of the journal’s activities, including events and conferences, fundraising, fact-checking, proofreading, and plenty of other tasks big and small. That said, the core of the assistant editor’s role will be:
Researching current scholarship with an eye toward new, different, and compelling policy ideas.
Reaching out to potential authors.
Writing and editing newsletters and other content for Democracy’s email subscribers.
Expanding Democracy’s social media presence.
The assistant editor will have broad latitude to research topics, solicit pitches, and write their own work, so sound editorial judgement is a priority.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree (required), preferably in political science, journalism, history, or a similar field.
One to two years of previous work experience (including internships).
Excellent writing, editing, and research skills.
A deep familiarity with the intricacies of American policymaking and politics.
An understanding of the Washington-area policymaking landscape, including institutions like think tanks and foundations.
Democracy offers a QSEHRA plan toward reimbursing health care costs, a 401(k) with an employer match, and generous leave.
This is a hybrid position based in Washington, D.C., with two days a week in office expected.
