Job Description

Job Description and Duties

The Government Law Section litigates high-profile and impactful constitutional issues, often in defense of state laws that protect the safety and wellbeing of all Californians. A critical portion of this work is in defense of California's commonsense firearm laws designed to protect our communities from gun violence. Under the general supervision of the Senior Assistant Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General Supervisor for the Firearms Team primarily supervises litigation relating to the defense of California's firearms laws and regulations. In this capacity, the SDAG directs, coordinates, and monitors the work of a team of subordinate attorneys, may directly supervise paralegals, and directs the work of support staff; evaluates the performance of subordinate attorneys and paralegals; provides training to subordinate attorneys and paralegals; handles general administrative matters; interviews and selects, or actively participates in the interview and selection process for, subordinate attorneys and paralegals; advises all levels of management within the Department of Justice, and consults with other departments and agencies, on firearms-related legal issues; and personally performs the most difficult and complex legal work related to jury trials, bench trials, writs, appeals, and administrative hearings, which requires the highest level of independent judgment. The SDAG also monitors and analyzes developing events involving firearms nationwide, including pending legislation and litigation in other forums, and advises on their potential impact. In addition, the SDAG may have the opportunity to supervise legal advice and representation related to other aspects of the Government Law Section's practice. Clients include the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Controller, Treasurer, Secretary of State, Department of Finance, and other state agencies and departments on a wide range of legal issues, including: constitutional and statutory law, government operations, elections, federalism, labor and union issues, housing reform, criminal justice reform, criminal information, internet privacy, state mandates, and other issues. The SDAG appears in state and federal courts throughout California and at both the trial and appellate levels. The SDAG may also be asked to prepare titles and summaries for ballot measures, or draft proposed state legislation. SDAGs in the Government Law Section are routinely asked to provide legal advice directly to the Chief Assistant Attorney General, the Chief Deputy Attorney General, and the Attorney General, as well as other Executive-level management.
